Neo Books & Coffee: Where Stories Find a Home in Bahrain

Born from a love of books and a desire to champion local voices, Neo Books & Coffee has grown into a welcoming space where reading, creativity, and community come together.

BAHRAIN: In a city where cafes are plentiful and bookstores less so, Neo Books &Coffee stands quietly apart — not just as a place to buy books or enjoy a cup of coffee, but as a space shaped by intention.

The story of Neo began with its founder, Haya Alkhalifa, a reader who became a writer — and a challenge that many local authors in Bahrain know well. When Alkhalifa published her first children’s book, she quickly discovered how difficult it was to sell it locally. Bookshops were limited, and opportunities for local voices were few.

What started as a personal frustration soon grew into a wider realization: Bahrain needed more spaces that celebrated books, stories, and creativity — especially those rooted in the local community. From that insight, Neo Books & Coffee was born.

From a dream to reality

Neo opened its doors in 2019, fueled by excitement, momentum, and the nervous energy that comes with starting something new.

“Everything was new, everything was a decision, and everything felt urgent,”

said Alkhalifa in an interview with What’s The Biz digital magazine.

One moment stands out clearly: the arrival of the very first shipment of books.

“That was when the dream felt real and tangible,” she says.

Then, only months later, the world changed.

The pandemic forced many small businesses to rethink their survival overnight, and Neo was no exception. With its physical doors temporarily closed, the team pivoted quickly to online sales, adapted operations, and explored new ways to continue serving readers.

It was a challenging period — but one that ultimately strengthened the business and clarified its purpose.

More than a cafe, more than a bookshop

Step inside Neo, and it becomes immediately clear that it is designed to feel lived- in, not intimidating. The space is intentionally cozy, with a soft monochrome palette that allows the books — and the people — to bring the color.

“Our hope is that every visitor feels a sense of belonging,” Alkhalifa explains.

Neo is meant to be a warm corner where people can escape, explore, create, or simply pause. Some come for a book, others for a cup of coffee, a quiet study session, or a moment of calm in a busy day.

Books and coffee, after all, share something essential: comfort.

The café side of Neo naturally complements the bookstore — the warmth of a cup in hand, the scent of freshly brewed coffee, and the gentle hum of quiet conversation create an atmosphere where creativity can settle and ideas can wander.

Championing local voices

Some of Neo’s most meaningful moments have come through its events and collaborations, particularly those that celebrate local talent. The bookshop has stocked works by local authors and, in some cases, helped writers publish and print their books — turning ideas into something tangible.

From intimate book signings to community workshops and creative meetups, these gatherings reflect why Neo exists: to give people a platform, a voice, and a home for their ideas.

Curated with intention

Neo’s shelves reflect a careful balance between popular demand and thoughtful curation. Bestsellers across genres are stocked and often available on release day, allowing readers to discover new stories as they arrive.

At the same time, the selection is shaped by listening — to customers, to the community, and to evolving interests. Many of the books reflect what Alkhalifa herself once searched for in local bookshops, or what she sees readers returning to again and again.

This attentiveness has allowed Neo to grow organically. What began with books expanded naturally into specialty coffee, then stationery, and more recently tabletop games — each addition guided by curiosity and community response rather than rigid planning.

Advice for dreamers

Asked what advice she would offer aspiring entrepreneurs, Alkhalifa’s message is simple and grounded.

“Start with what you love, stay curious, and allow your ideas to grow naturally,” she says.

Neo itself is proof of that philosophy — shaped step by step, guided by listening rather than rushing.

“Start before you’re ready,” she adds.

“You’ll never feel completely prepared. Your dream doesn’t have to start big — it just has to start.”

In a landscape often dominated by speed and spectacle, Neo Books & Coffee offers something quieter - a reminder that meaningful spaces are built slowly, with care, and with people at the center.
